Frequently Asked Questions
What size should a Discord banner be?
Discord banners are 960×540 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Nitro subscribers can upload banners to their user profiles. Server banners also use this size. Discord compresses uploads heavily, so pre-compressing under 6MB gives noticeably better final quality.
What file format should I use for my Discord banner?
JPG is best for photo banners and produces the smallest files. Use PNG only if your banner contains graphics or text overlays that need crisp edges. Discord accepts JPG, PNG, and animated GIF up to 10 MB.
Where is the safe zone for a Discord banner?
Your circular profile picture overlaps the bottom-center of the banner. Keep important text and logos away from the lower-center area. The top two-thirds and the left/right edges are the safest zones for critical content.
Do I need Discord Nitro to set a banner?
Yes — Discord requires Nitro to set a custom profile banner. Server admins without Nitro can still set a server banner from Server Settings → Overview as long as the server has enough boost level.
What is the difference between a user banner and a server banner?
A user banner is the photo behind your avatar in direct messages and your profile (Nitro required). A server banner appears on the server's invite page and member list. Both use the same 960×540 size and 16:9 ratio.
Will my photo metadata be removed?
Yes. All EXIF metadata including GPS location, camera model, and timestamp are automatically stripped from your output banner. Your processed image contains only the visual data.
