For photographs and complex images, yes — usually 25–35% smaller at 92% quality. WebP uses more efficient entropy coding than PNG and supports a true lossy mode with perceptual optimization.

For graphics, screenshots, and text-heavy images, the WebP is similar or slightly smaller. Lossy WebP at high quality rarely beats lossless PNG on already-efficient graphics, but the savings on photographs are substantial.

Yes — WebP supports a transparent (alpha) channel just like PNG. Transparent pixels in the source PNG remain transparent in the WebP output. For fully opaque images the alpha channel is dropped automatically to save a few extra bytes.

This makes WebP an excellent replacement for PNG when you want both smaller file size and alpha support.

This converter produces lossy WebP at 92% quality by default — visually identical to PNG for most images but with much smaller files.

Lossless WebP produces files larger than the PNG for photographs, so it's rarely the right choice. If you need perfect pixel fidelity (medical imaging, technical diagrams), stay in PNG or use a lossless WebP tool.
